A little update…
A few weeks ago I let you know about a photography competition I was entering, my first one, via a post titled ‘My First Competition‘. After procrastinating for a few weeks I have narrowed my choices down and selected eight photos, although I can only enter six – two per category.
So, I need a little help with one category in particular… ‘nature’ – landscapes, animals, insects etc. I have narrowed my selection down to a possible 4 photos, which is where you step in and help me choose which two I should enter and which two I should ‘cut’.
To help simply scroll down to the ‘nature’ category below and choose your favourite two photos from this category ONLY, and add their names to the comments below. The photos names will be directly below each photo.

I like the Morning Reflection as well, but the gull is out of focus and I am not sure if they will get all technical like that when judging.

Cheers Aaron. I was thinking exactly the same thing about the seagull reflection photo. That and the fact the horizon is not straight, sadly.
I was personally leaning towards goat, actually the goat photo may just be my fav of all.
It’s a shame the gull is not sharper, but to be honest I was surprised how sharp it turned out to be, given the conditions of that morning along with how far away the gull was.
No one has voted for ‘four seagulls’ as yet so it seems that one is out. It’s a nice, clear, sharp, brightly coloured photo, but it’s not a stand out. It’s not something you wouldn’t see somewhere else. It was probably the easiest photo of the 8 to capture by a long way also.
The problem with the 4 seagulls is that even the main one is not quite in focus. Even though Morning Reflection is not quite 100% in focus, capturing it and it’s reflection whilst in flight may be oaky.
Yeah seems we think a like. I’m questioning it because of its clarity, but it’s hard to cut it also because it’s not an easy photo to capture in terms of timing etc. the four seagulls is quite sharp… very sharp actually.
The photo files I’ve uploaded above are reduced a little to put onto the blog. They are 1.5mb each or so compared to about 10mb for the jpeg. Psd (photoshop files) are much larger. some close to 90mb.
I was just thinking more about the two seagull photos. They are really at complete opposite ends to each other in many ways.
Four Seagulls was taken midday with great light with a 50mm fixed lens at about as close to the gulls as I could get. That was actually a free eye shot. I was sitting next to them and sat my camera down by my side.
Whereas the Reflection photo was taken in low light at dawn with an 18-280mm Tamron lens at full zoom. The gull was a good 150-200m away flying crossways to me so I used the following subject technique so as to minimise any blur. I was moving my camera along with it whilst also trying to line the top left and top right dots with the horizon whilst also keeping the gull centered. All this happened in less than 5 sec. This is where a 5D and L series lens would make a noticeable difference, not to mention a full sensor.
